Home      Cloth Menstrual Pads      Storage and Washing Recommendations

Storage & Washing Recommendations:

During your cycle cloth pads can be stored in a dry or wet pail until wash day. A wet pail will keep your pads from staining as much.

Using a wet pail:
A small bathroom garbage can with a tight lid and an inside pail on that lifts out works nicely for wet pad storage.  One can be found at discount stores for about $15-$20. This makes it easy to take the entire pail and pour both pads and water into your machine. Spin the water out and begin wash cycle.

If you do not wash your pads every day, pour out the water daily and replace with clean water. Leaving your pads in dirty water for too many days before washing will result in very discolored pads.

Using a dry pail:
Storing your used pads is just as easy in a dry pail. I like to line a small garbage can with a cloth liner. On wash day, I simply turn the liner upside down, dropping the pads into the wash and then drop the liner in as well. No need to handle used pads!

Washing and Drying:
Wash pads on a long, HOT wash cycle using only a small amount of detergent. Too much detergent can leave buildup. If you use a regular amount of detergent, run a second rinse.

Never use fabric softener.  It creates a barrier on the fabric and causes wetness to bead up instead of soak in.

Bleach is not recommended for every wash as it will break down the fibers very quickly. Use your own personal preference with bleach but know that it does deteriorate fabric.

Line or machine dry.

Again, no fabric softener in the washer or dryer!
